THE BUSOGA TRIBAL AREA

  • Poverty densities range from 27% to 62%. The highest rates are in Luuka (Iganga District) at 62%.
  • Continues to show little or no progress with poverty reduction over the past 15 years.
  • Disease is a good indicator of poverty levels; the more rampant the diseases, the poorer the region.
  • Luuka County has a population of over 250,000 people, an extremely high birth rate, and only two health centers at the sub-county level—no hospital.
  • One report found the wealthier Central and Western regions had lower pupil-teacher ratios-higher in the North and Eastern regions.

UGANDA

  • Up to 50,000 children are estimated to have been abducted by LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) and are forced to kill and be sex slaves.
  • 1 in 7.5 children under five years of age die.
  • The median age in Uganda is 15 due to deaths from AIDS.
  • Uganda is the world-wide epicenter for HIV/AIDS cases, orphaning 1 in 5 children.

AFRICA AND THE WORLD

  • Every 15 seconds, another child becomes an AIDS orphan in Africa.
  • Every day, more then 5.5K children become orphans (3,600 from AIDS).
  • Every year, 2.1M+ children become orphaned in Africa.
  • On average, orphans spend 10 or more years in orphanages world wide.
  • Only 250,000 (approx.) children are adopted annually.
  • Every day, nearly 38K children “age out” of an orphanage system with no family support.
  • Almost 90% of the estimated 16.6M children orphaned by AIDS live in Sub-Saharan Africa.
